Shannon Flynn wins 4th Annual Stirling Invitational
Golf College student and Burhill Golf Club member Shannon Flynn, has won the 2014 University of Stirling Invitational Championship, hosted by Dundonald Links.
Representing ISGA after qualifying from this year’s order of merit, Shannon started the tournament with a 10 on the first hole, and after being +8 through 3 holes, managed to battle her way through to complete round 1 with a 79 (+7).
Despite decent weather, the course conditions were tough, with tricky pin placements and longer than usual holes, the daily course changes meant the players could never get complacent.
After a steady second round 74 (+2), Shannon found herself 5 shots behind the lead in 3rd place, with one round to go.
With an ever-improving score, Shannon managed to progress to -4 by the 13th hole in the final round to take the lead. However, disaster stuck on the par 5 14th, when she recorded a quadruple bogey 9, slipping her back to level par for the round.
A steady finish left Shannon with a round of 73 (+1), and a 1 shot victory over Stirling’s Gemma Batty and 2 shots clear of overnight leader Nastja Banovec. The Golf College also had another student (and Burhill GC member) in the field, with Lizzie Prior finishing 4th after a final round of 75.
Shannon will be back to The Golf College this week to complete her BTEC Diploma in Sport, and with her performance this week cutting her handicap by a whole shot, playing off +1.4 will certainly be a strong contender throughout the rest of the academic year.
