The Surrey Ladies 2014 County Championships took place from 4th to 6th April at Royal Wimbledon GC.
After the 36 hole stroke-play qualifier, all three players from the Golf College were at the head of the leaderboard. Shannon Flynn was joint leader, while Lauren Horsford and Lizzie Prior were in 3rd & 4th places respectively, all going through to the last 16 matchplay stages over the weekend.
Shannon lost in the first round, with Lauren getting to the semi-final before losing to Iona Stephen who went through to meet Lizzie Prior in the final.
Meanwhile, Lizzie Prior won her first round match 5&4 followed by a 3&2 win in the quarter finals in the afternoon, and a 2&1 win in a hard fought semi-final.
In the final, Lizzie played Iona Stephen from Wentworth in what was to be a memorable match with both players being 2 up a different stages of the match.
Lizzie had got to 1up on the 13th and was looking at a 3ft birdie putt on the next, when Iona holed a 60ft eagle putt to get the mach back to all-square. Lizzie replied with back-to-back wins on 15 and 16 to go 2 up again, but then missed a short putt for the match on 17 losing the hole.
With Lizzie 1 up it was all down to the last, a very tricky almost blind 265 yard short par 4. Iona played first and hit a 3 wood to the front edge of the green approx. 75ft from the hole. Lizzie followed with a magnificent reply, hitting her 3 wood over all the hazards onto the right side of the green leaving a 20ft eagle putt.
Iona went 7ft passed with her attempt, followed by Lizzie who lagged a fast downhill double breaking putt inside a foot, to be conceded for the match and the Championship.
It was a tremendous final and a very worthy winner.
